Originally published in 1965, On Weaving traces the passage from craft to industrial production, highlighting the importance of materiality and the creative innovations that emerged whenever design problems were solved by hand. Placing materials and hand-loom at the centre of her thinking, Albers addresses the limits imposed on creativity and craftsmanship by technology and mass production, arguing for a return to human ingenuity that feels more essential than ever. Her lucid, captivating prose is accompanied by a wealth of illustrations: hand-drawn diagrams, details of pre-Columbian textiles, studies made from corn kernels, paper or a typewriter, alongside precious reproductions of her own works.

This expanded edition replaces the original's black-and-white illustrations with colour photographs, and adds a postface by Nicholas Fox Weber and two essays by T'ai Smith and Ida Soulard that shed new light on the artist and her career.

Anni Albers (1899–1994) was a textile artist, weaver, writer, teacher and lithographer whose work inspired a reconsideration of textiles as an artistic form - in their functional role, as freestanding wall hangings, and as pictorial weavings. Born Annelise Else Frieda Fleischmann in Berlin in 1899, she joined the Bauhaus weaving workshop in Weimar (1922–1925) and then in Dessau (1925–1932). The Alberses emigrated to the United States in 1933; Anni Albers directed the weaving workshop at Black Mountain College from 1933 to 1949. In 1949, she became the first textile artist to be given a solo exhibition at MoMA. She died in Orange, Connecticut, in 1994.

Anni Albers (1899–1994) est une artiste textile, tisserande, écrivaine, enseignante et lithographe ayant inspiré une reconsidération des textiles comme forme artistique dans leur rôle fonctionnel, en tant que tentures autonomes et en tant que tissages picturaux. Née Annelise Else Frieda Fleischmann à Berlin en 1899, elle participe à l'atelier de tissage du Bauhaus à Weimar (1922–1925) puis à Dessau (1925–1932). Les Albers immigrent aux États-Unis en 1933 ; Anni Albers dirige l'atelier de tissage du Black Mountain College de 1933 à 1949. Nicholas Fox Weber is the director of the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation. He is the author of fifteen books, including biographies of Balthus and Le Corbusier, and more recently of Freud's Trip to Orvieto (Bellevue Literary Press, 2017). His latest essay, iBauhaus, was published by Penguin Random House in 2020.

Nicholas Fox Weber est directeur de la Josef et Anni Albers Foundation. Il est l'auteur de quinze ouvrages, dont des biographies de Balthus et Le Corbusier, et plus récemment de Freud's Trip to Orvieto (Bellevue Literary Press, 2017). T'ai Smith is an associate professor in the Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory at the University of British Columbia. She is the author of Bauhaus Weaving Theory: From Feminine Craft to Mode of Design (University of Minnesota Press, 2014).
