In the heart of the Chihuahuan desert, three hours from El Paso, Marfa is a small town of 1,800 inhabitants. Built in 1882 along the railway line, a bastion of border patrols, an air force training camp during World War II, Donald Judd settled there in the early 1970s and bought the then-abandoned military buildings to install his works and those of his friends (Dan Flavin, Roni Horn, John Chamberlain, Claes Oldenburg, etc.). After his death in the 1990s, contemporary art galleries, artist residencies and film festivals arrived, definitively transforming the city into a major international contemporary art hub.
Starting from these dynamics, in April 2015, six students from les beaux-arts de Nantes will travel to Marfa for three weeks. This stay will aim to explore these passages, these moments of slippage and articulation, understood as the possible definition of an artistic dynamic, a method, both of research, production and exhibition. This collective exploration will conclude with an exhibition in Marfa, a return exhibition in Nantes and the production of a publication.
As a prelude to this trip, on Saturday 28 February the students present at Treize works representative of their current research, accompanied by their projects for Marfa in the form of models, drawings, plans and texts. Conceived as an intermediate stage, this day of practical workshop aims to be a moment of acceleration and intensification of their individual projects through the interventions, throughout the day, of artists, producers and exhibition curators who will come to respond to their proposals.
