DUST was initiated in 2016 as a four-year transdisciplinary program, conceived and organized by Abinadi Meza (University of Houston) and Ida Soulard (beaux-arts Nantes Saint-Nazaire), in the context of Fieldwork: Marfa. Run jointly by les beaux-arts de Nantes Métropole and the Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts at the University of Houston, the program brought together artists, theorists, architects, musicians, writers and researchers across three annual cycles.

Each year was organized around a central question explored through a symposium in Houston, a seminar series in Nantes (Bleeding at the Edges), a three-week intensive studio in Marfa (Plot Manifest) with graduate students from both institutions, and the Marfa Sounding concerts and performances.

Deserting the Site (2016) examined the desert as an abstract and concrete site - a projection surface for utopian and military experiments, a zone of crisis and subcultural invention - and its relation to the shift from 'space' to 'site' in 1960s and 70s artistic production. The inaugural symposium in Houston brought together Benjamin Bratton, Keller Easterling, Natilee Harren, Derek Woods, Andy Campbell, Gabriel Martinez and others. Marfa Sounding 1 featured Alvin Lucier and Charles Curtis.

Navigating the Site (2017) explored navigation as a set of gestures, instruments and figures shaping new cognitive and concrete landscapes - from colonial to subcultural, from algorithmic to geological. The Houston program (Cargo and Carriers) gathered Eyal Weizman, Jill Magid, Jeff VanderMeer, Jacob Kirkegaard, Mariam Ghani, Geoff Manaugh and others. The Nantes seminar invited speakers to address the texture and topology of contemporary landscapes through the presentation of their own artistic practices. Marfa Sounding 2 continued the collaboration with Jennifer Burris Staton, exploring the work of Anna Halprin with Stephen Petronio, Silas Riener, Rashaun Mitchell and others.

Timing the Site (2018) addressed the spatializing logic of time under contemporary capitalism - the multiplicity of presents, the feeling of dispossession and temporal drift - and asked what new activist and aesthetic repertoires could inflect this condition. The Houston program (Against All Suns) featured Walid Raad, Franco "Bifo" Berardi, Suzanne Lacy, Monika Lipšic and others. Marfa Sounding 3 was dedicated to Tarek Atoui, curated by Jennifer Burris Staton and Ida Soulard.

Over the three years, the Plot Manifest studios brought together 14 graduate students per year for intensive research and production in Marfa, with exhibitions in Marfa, Houston and Nantes. In 2017 and 2018, the studio expanded to include students from HEAD-Genève, as part of a broader consortium of art schools - CalArts (California), HEAD-Genève, University of Houston and beaux-arts Nantes - developed in parallel with Fieldwork: Marfa. Across the seminars, lectures and studios, the program reached approximately a hundred students over three years.
