Fieldwork Marfa

Fieldwork Marfa was an international residency, research and production platform engaging master's students, artists and international researchers in multiform exchanges. The Nantes Beaux-Arts campus in Marfa addressed major contemporary issues - cultural and economic globalisation, the impact of digital technologies, planetary financialisation, the play of borders - and aimed to drive the development of new individual and collective tools and strategies for acting within these contemporary landscapes.

Fieldwork Marfa était un programme international de résidence, de recherche, et une plate-forme de production qui engageait étudiant·es de master, artistes et chercheur·euses internationaux·ales dans des échanges multiformes. Le campus des Beaux-Arts de Nantes à Marfa était tourné vers les grands enjeux contemporains (la globalisation culturelle et économique, l'impact des technologies digitales, de la financiarisation planétaire, le jeu des frontières…) et se voulait moteur de l'élaboration de nouveaux outils et stratégies, individuels et collectifs, pour agir dans ces paysages contemporains.

This campus was structured around three poles: RESEARCH and PRODUCTION were led by artists and researchers during residencies, and involved the invention of pedagogical tools, and the production of artworks or artistic events; the STUDIOS, intended for master's students, took place within transdisciplinary and experimental teaching methods. The Campus was structured around a double partnership with HEAD-Genève and the School of Art of the University of Houston, and regularly welcomed other schools. Seminars, artistic events and lectures, open to all students from the participating schools, were organised in Houston, Nantes and Marfa each year, allowing students to immerse themselves in the spatial, social and cultural realities of Marfa, within a dynamic international context of research and production.

Ce campus était structuré autour de trois pôles : RECHERCHE et PRODUCTION étaient menées par des artistes et des chercheur·euses lors de résidences, et impliquaient l'invention de dispositifs pédagogiques, la production d'œuvres ou d'événements artistiques ; les STUDIOS destinés à des étudiant·es en master se faisaient dans le cadre de méthodes d'enseignement transdisciplinaires et expérimentales. Le Campus était structuré autour d'un double partenariat avec la HEAD-Genève et l'école d'art de l'Université de Houston et accueillait régulièrement d'autres écoles. Des séminaires, évènements artistiques et des conférences, ouverts à tou·tes les étudiant·es des écoles, étaient organisés à Houston, Nantes et Marfa chaque année permettant une immersion des étudiant·es au cœur des réalités spatiales, sociales et culturelles de Marfa, et dans un contexte international dynamique de recherche et de production.

Marfa is located three hours from El Paso, in the grand landscapes of West Texas; this small town of fewer than 2,000 inhabitants grew up along the railway line at the end of the nineteenth century and was home to the Border Patrol as well as a military training camp during the Second World War. In the 1970s, Donald Judd bought a number of the town's then-abandoned buildings to exhibit his work and that of his friends Dan Flavin, Roni Horn, John Chamberlain, Claes Oldenburg, and others. After his death in 1994, the creation of the Judd and Chinati foundations, art galleries (Ballroom Marfa, Marfa Contemporary), artist residencies (Chinati, Ballroom, Marfa Contemporary), writer residencies (Lannan Foundation), film festivals (CineMarfa, Marfa Film Festival) and a music festival (Transpecos Festival) definitively transformed the town into a hub of international contemporary art.

Marfa est située à trois heures d'El Paso, dans les paysages grandioses du West Texas ; cette petite ville de moins de 2000 habitants s'est construite sur le tracé du chemin de fer à la fin du XIX^e siècle et a abrité la Border Patrol ainsi qu'un camp d'entraînement militaire pendant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale. Dans les années 1970, Donald Judd achète une partie des bâtiments alors abandonnés pour y exposer ses œuvres et celles de ses ami·es Dan Flavin, Roni Horn, John Chamberlain, Claes Oldenburg, etc. Après sa mort, en 1994, la création des deux fondations Judd et Chinati, de galeries d'art (Ballroom Marfa, Marfa Contemporary), de résidences d'artistes (Chinati, Ballroom, Marfa Contemporary), de résidences d'écrivain·es (Lannan Foundation), de festivals de cinéma (CineMarfa, Marfa Film Festival) et de musique (Transpecos Festival) transforme définitivement la ville en haut lieu de l'art contemporain international.

From 2013 to 2020, as artistic director, coordinator and teacher at the Beaux-Arts de Nantes Saint-Nazaire, I supervised the residency program (6 artists per year) and developed new institutional partnerships: Austin Contemporary, The Blaffer Museum in Houston, The University of Texas at Austin, the School of Art at Houston University.

De 2013 à 2020, en tant que directrice artistique, coordinatrice et enseignante aux Beaux-Arts de Nantes Saint-Nazaire, j'ai supervisé le programme de résidence (6 artistes par an) et développé de nouveaux partenariats institutionnels : Austin Contemporary, The Blaffer Museum à Houston, The University of Texas à Austin, the School of Art at Houston University.

I took part in developing a consortium of art schools - CalArts, Beaux-Arts de Paris, HEAD-Genève, Glasgow School of Art, Houston University - as well as in establishing the program at its new physical site and developing local partnerships: Chinati Foundation, Judd Foundation, Marfa Book Company, Marfa High School.

J'ai participé au développement d'un consortium d'écoles d'art - CalArts, Beaux-Arts de Paris, HEAD-Genève, Glasgow School of Art, Houston University - ainsi qu'à l'implantation du programme sur son nouveau lieu physique et au développement des partenariats locaux : Chinati Foundation, Judd Foundation, Marfa Book Company, Marfa High School.

I coordinated the internal teams at the Nantes school and ensured the flow of information, as well as the coordination of research and pedagogy across the consortium's schools. This work gave rise to several long-term projects:

Marfa Sounding - a music, dance and performance festival in Marfa, Texas, in collaboration with curator Jennifer Burris, over 3 years, which led to the publication Marfa Sounding (Mousse Publishing, 2021).
