Glass Bead

Glass Bead was conceived and run by Fabien Giraud, Jeremy Lecomte, Vincent Normand, Ida Soulard and Inigo Wilkins - artists, art historians and theorists based in Paris and London.

Glass Bead's project is defined by its two distinct yet interconnected activities: Journal and Research. Research comprises the organization of private and public events (workshops, conferences), an Audio Research Program (made of the recording of talks and special interviews), and a Research Platform, in which the community of participants is invited to share elements of their current research. Each issue of the Journal is dedicated to the exploration of the theoretical, political or aesthetic dimensions of a specific "site", and can be seen as a point of synthesis in the activity of Research.

Le projet de Glass Bead se définit par deux activités distinctes mais interconnectées : la Revue et la Recherche. La Recherche comprend l'organisation d'événements privés et publics (ateliers, conférences), un Programme de Recherche Audio, et une Plateforme de Recherche où la communauté de participant·es est invitée à partager des éléments de leur recherche en cours. Chaque numéro de la Revue est consacré à l'exploration des dimensions théoriques, politiques ou esthétiques d'un « site » spécifique.

The workshops are organized on the occasion of Glass Bead's public events and offer the chance to put our methodological approach into practice, to make dynamic transits between different epistemic contexts, and to deepen our understanding of the issues involved. For each workshop we choose a limited number of participants, curated in order to provide a diverse group of theoretical and practical backgrounds. The workshop's methodology is based on processes of cognitive mapping achieved through several stages of group separation and reintegration involving discussion, explanation, diagrammatic thinking, and presentation at each stage.

Les ateliers sont organisés à l'occasion des événements publics de Glass Bead et offrent l'occasion de mettre en pratique notre approche méthodologique, d'opérer des passages dynamiques entre différents contextes épistémiques, et d'approfondir notre compréhension des enjeux en cause. Pour chaque atelier, nous choisissons un nombre limité de participant·es, sélectionné·es de façon à réunir un groupe diversifié de parcours théoriques et pratiques. La méthodologie de l'atelier repose sur des processus de cartographie cognitive obtenus à travers plusieurs étapes de séparation et de réintégration du groupe, impliquant discussion, explication, pensée diagrammatique et présentation à chaque étape.

Founded in 2013, Glass Bead initiated in 2014 a first year of research, which translated into a series of events at MoMA PS1 (New York), e-flux (New York), and Les Laboratoires d'Aubervilliers (Paris). Following these events, Glass Bead undertook the creation of an online journal (bilingual, published annually) and of an associated research platform. The first issue, Site 0: Castalia, the Game of Ends and Means, was published in February 2016. The second issue, Site 1: Logic Gates, the Politics of the Artifactual Mind, was launched at ZKM | Karlsruhe, in 2017, and its final issue, published in 2019, is titled Site 2: Dark Room: Somatic Reason and Synthetic Eros.

Fondé en 2013, Glass Bead a initié en 2014 une première année de recherche, qui s'est traduite par une série d'événements au MoMA PS1 (New York), à e-flux (New York) et aux Laboratoires d'Aubervilliers (Paris). À la suite de ces événements, Glass Bead a entrepris la création d'une revue en ligne (bilingue, publiée annuellement) et d'une plateforme de recherche associée. Le premier numéro, Site 0: Castalia, the Game of Ends and Means, a été publié en février 2016. Le second numéro, Site 1: Logic Gates, the Politics of the Artifactual Mind, a été lancé au ZKM | Karlsruhe, en 2017 et son dernier numéro, paru en 2019, s'intitule Site 2: Dark Room: Somatic Reason and Synthetic Eros.

Glass Bead also operated and intervened at Okayama Triennale (2019), Zurich University of the Arts (2016), ENSAD Paris (2016), NCRP (2015), Vierte Welt and Archive Kabinet Berlin via Jan van Eyck Association (2015), Postmedialab Lüneburg (2014).

Glass Bead est également intervenu à la Triennale d'Okayama (2019), à la Zurich University of the Arts (2016), à l'ENSAD Paris (2016), au NCRP (2015), à Vierte Welt et Archive Kabinet Berlin via la Jan van Eyck Association (2015), et au Postmedialab de Lüneburg (2014).
