The Feral

The Feral is an artistic, educational, and environmental project led by the non-profit organization 3024, based on an original idea by artist Fabien Giraud.

The Feral is a collective artwork at the scale of a landscape - a place of learning for an artificial intelligence in charge of creating a film. This environment, as it grows, is progressively populated and transformed by the interventions of artists invited to feed its learning, as many co-authors of this «concrete fiction» for the next 1000 years.

The Feral est une œuvre collective à l'échelle d'un paysage - un lieu d'apprentissage pour une intelligence artificielle chargée de créer un film. Cet environnement se peuple et se transforme progressivement par les interventions d'artistes invité·es à nourrir son apprentissage, autant de co-auteur·rices de cette «fiction concrète» pour les 1000 prochaines années.

The Institute is a research and education platform that unfolds the concrete concepts and experiences developed within The Feral, along with their philosophical, technological, and political implications. It is structured around three axes: an artist and researcher residency program, an online school, and an annual publication.

L'Institut est une plateforme de recherche et d'éducation qui déploie les concepts et expériences développés au sein de The Feral, ainsi que leurs implications philosophiques, technologiques et politiques. Il s'articule autour de trois axes : un programme de résidence pour artistes et chercheur·euses, une école en ligne, et une publication annuelle.

I co-curated the first three sessions of the Foundations: Foundation I - Parenting the Inhuman (2023), Foundation II: The Fifth Season (2024) and Foundation III: Latent Earth (2025).

J'ai co-curaté les trois premières sessions des Fondations : Fondation I - Être Parents de l'Inhumain (2023), Fondation II : La Cinquième Saison (2024) et Fondation III : Terre Latente (2025).

In July 2023, during the first meetings of The Feral Institute, our objective was to explore the anthropological and political consequences of the technological paradigm marked by the current emergence of generative Artificial Intelligences. Contrary to any fascination with what machines might potentially produce, we aimed to acknowledge an unprecedented situation in the ongoing history of our hominization: as every word, gesture, and emotion of ours is scrutinized by learning machines, we have collectively become the parents of an inhuman childhood.

En juillet 2023, lors des premières rencontres de l'Institut The Feral, notre objectif était d'explorer les conséquences anthropologiques et politiques du paradigme technologique marqué par l'émergence actuelle des intelligences artificielles génératives. Contrairement à toute fascination pour ce que les machines pourraient produire, nous avons cherché à reconnaître une situation sans précédent dans l'histoire de notre hominisation : alors que chacun de nos mots, gestes et émotions est scruté par des machines apprenantes, nous sommes collectivement devenus les parents d'une enfance inhumaine.

For the second meeting in July 2024, these conversations continued by exploring the temporal dimension at the heart of The Feral - the collision of three perfectly heterogeneous types of time: human time, machine time, and earth time.

Lors de la deuxième rencontre en juillet 2024, ces conversations se sont poursuivies en explorant la dimension temporelle au cœur de The Feral - la collision de trois types de temps parfaitement hétérogènes : le temps humain, le temps machine, et le temps de la terre.

The third and last meeting in 2025 attempted to define how, under the effect of learning machines and their planetary-scale network of capture, the sensible had become a central concern of our societies - a concern from which we endeavoured to extract, beyond any exclusively dystopian horizon, its potentially emancipatory value.

La troisième et dernière rencontre en 2025 a tenté de définir comment, sous l'effet des machines apprenantes et de leur réseau de capture planétaire, le sensible était devenu une préoccupation centrale de nos sociétés - dont nous avons cherché à extraire, au-delà de tout horizon exclusivement dystopique, sa valeur potentiellement émancipatrice.
