Marfa Live Arts and Fieldwork: Marfa were proud to present Marfa Sounding - a three-year exploration into the acoustic processes of a specific place, which began as a 2015 curatorial residency. Focusing on "phase shifting" in music, particularly as it relates to early experiments in Minimalism and artists whose practices run from the 1960s into the present, Marfa Sounding hosted writers from many different backgrounds - composers, sound theorists, art critics, dance historians, filmmakers, educators, students, curators, and archivists - who treat performance as a point of departure for thinking through the intersection of music, minimalism, and the political.
Marfa Live Arts et Fieldwork : Marfa ont présenté Marfa Sounding - une exploration sur trois ans des processus acoustiques d'un site spécifique, née en 2015 d'une résidence curatoriale de Jennifer Burris. Centré sur le « déphasage » en musique, Marfa Sounding a réuni des auteur·rices aux horizons très divers qui traitent la performance comme point de départ pour penser l'intersection de la musique, du minimalisme et du politique.
Marfa Sounding treated sound as a frame for understanding how art integrates with, invades, and is effectively produced by its context. The spaces of Marfa also became frames for sound as individual and collective.
Marfa Sounding s'intéresse au son comme un cadre pour comprendre comment l'art s'intègre à son contexte, l'envahit et en est effectivement produit. Les espaces de Marfa sont devenus eux aussi des cadres pour le son, individuel et collectif.

The weekend's events began on Friday, May 25 at the Crowley Theater with a reception, lecture by Atoui, launch of Marfa Sounding website, and performances with musicians. On Saturday, May 26 at Saint George Hall there was a concert, and the weekend concluded on Sunday, May 27 with another concert at Vizcaino Park. Atoui brought the following instruments to Marfa: Zero Point Nine, a sound installation realized through monumental bass synthesizers, and Sound Boxes, a series of instruments housing field recordings from sites around the world. The program included a ten-day artist residency during which Atoui conducted a series of workshops at Marfa High School.

Les événements du week-end ont débuté le vendredi 25 mai au Crowley Theater avec une réception, une conférence de Tarek Atoui, le lancement du site internet de Marfa Sounding, et des performances avec des musicien·nes. Le samedi 26 mai à Saint George Hall a eu lieu un concert, et le week-end s'est conclu le dimanche 27 mai par un autre concert à Vizcaino Park. Atoui a apporté à Marfa les instruments suivants : Zero Point Nine, une installation sonore réalisée à partir de synthétiseurs basse monumentaux, et Sound Boxes, une série d'instruments abritant des enregistrements de terrain provenant de sites du monde entier. Le programme comprenait une résidence d'artiste de dix jours durant laquelle Atoui a animé une série d'ateliers au lycée de Marfa.
